Shamrocks Win Two More.  Sweep Amherst!

The Hantsport Shamrocks pushed their winning streak to 15 games and held their lead atop the NSIBL standings in impressive fashion last weekend, sweeping the Amherst Dooly's Coors Light Blues in Amherst by the scores of 10-4 and 4-0.  The Shamrocks now sit at 19-1 on the season, good for a 1 game lead over the rival Pictou County Molson Canadian Albions (20-4).

In game one in Amherst, the Shamrocks got off to a slow start falling behind 3-1 behind the strong pitching of Amherst ace Matt Keddy.  However, the Shamrocks used patience at the plate, converting three walks and a single into 3 runs in the fifth to take the lead, 4-3.  After Amherst tied the score in the bottom of the fifth on a bloop single by Amherst right fielder, Jeff Hoeg, the Shamrocks took control scoring 3 more in the sixth on clutch two out hits by Derek Hart and Shawn Fuller and then added 3 more in the seventh to win going away, 10-4.  Joey Gaudet again looked strong on the hill for the Shamrocks allowing 4 runs on 7 hits.  He walked only one Amherst batter while striking out 7.  He improved his record to 5-0 on the season.Derek Hart and Jeff Bishop led the Shamrocks at the dish with a pair of hits each.  Hart added 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.  Brad Steadman chipped in scoring three time, once with a well timed steal of home.

In the getaway game, Doug "Gas" Coldwell continued his stellar season pitching a complete game 5 hit shutout, his second of the season, to lead the Shamrocks to a 4-0 blanking of the Blues. Coldwell, 5-0, did not walk a batter and struck out 4.  He did not allow a batter to get past 2nd base.  All the runs the Shamrocks would need were scored in the third inning.  Again, the Shamrocks showed some clutch two out hitting with Jeff Bishop delivering a run scoring single followed by Matt Pearl knocking a bases loaded double to put Hantsport ahead 4-0.  It was pitching and defence the rest of the way for the Shamrocks.

The Shamrocks will host the Metro District Provincial qualifier at Shamrock Field on the weekend of August 18-19.  Along with the Shamrocks, the Windsor Knights and the Halifax Garrisons of the Metro Intermediate Baseball League, will compete for a spot in the Intermediate "AAA" Provincial Championships on Labour Day Weekend in Stellarton.  Games are scheduled to begin at 9:00 am both Saturday and Sunday.  A complete schedule will be available early next week.

A reminder that the Shamrocks have earned the right to host the NSIBL Championship at Shamrock Field the weekend of August 25.  The top four teams in the NSIBL will be competing for league bragging rights.  To date, only Hantsport and Pictou County have clinched spots in the tournament.  The other two spots are still up for grabs and will be decided through league play over the next two weekends.  A complete schedule and list of competing teams will be posted when they have been finalized.
